Online ESL Teaching Jobs in 2022

Allschool information updated March 30, 2022.

Looking for online ESL teaching jobs? Online ESL teaching jobs in 2022 have been more difficult to sustain. One solution: online teacher marketplaces.

Many teachers continue to work from home, and Outschool has been a favorite marketplace to work for. But in 2022 when you hear “Outschool, ” do you think, “oversaturated?”

Let’s consider four different online ESL marketplaces.

Or watch it here:

Are you interested in learning more? You can jump ahead to post #2 in this series to learn about teaching online within the homeschool marketplace by clicking here. Or you can learn about a teacher cooperative created for teachers, by teachers in post #3. Click here for that article. Post #4 has been published! For marketplaces that focus on enrichment and activities, read here. OUTSCHOOL

Outschool is probably the most well-known marketplace for its online teaching positions in 2022. Using that as our baseline for comparison, let’s take a look at some of its features.

The big question for a lot of people is whether a degree is required to teach on any given online platform. With Outschool, the answer is: no, you do not need a degree.

Your student population can come from all over the world. They will typically be school-aged kiddos.

Many online tutors are still in touch with their Chinese students. You may want to connect with them before you begin to freelance tutor, and teaching them on a teacher marketplace like Outschool might be a good starting point.

If you are considering freelance tutoring, but aren’t sure whether you’ll have enough students, there is another option available with Outschool.

Some teachers have had enough success teaching on Outschool that they have been able to create their own independent company that works under the Outschool umbrella. These teachers hire other online instructors to teach students when they have too many. This has a little more security than striking it out on your own.

Joining this Facebook group can put you in touch with teacher-built companies looking for more internet-savvy teachers to join their organizations. This adds to your potential for finding online teaching jobs.

Another unique teaching feature of Outschool is a program called “Pods”. Multiple online teachers come together to create and teach different subjects as part of one online program.

If you take a look at Glassdoor to see what users think of Outschool, you’ll find that the majority of people do really like their platform. Pros for the site include being about to teach what you like, to set your own price and the number of students in your class.

The biggest downside listed on Glassdoor has to do with enrollment, which varies by season, as well as with the number of kids returning to brick and mortar schools. Reviewers also noted that Outschool takes 30% of your earnings for their commission. That is a downside, but you will find that nearly all of these companies take a commission. Finally, teachers are finding that this market is relatively saturated.

Applying to Outschool is relatively easy, although you will need to have an idea of what you’ll be offering before you complete the application. Included in the video above are basic instructions and tips to fill out the Outschool application. Next let’s take a look at a four options for online ESL marketplaces: Allschool, Hallo, Cafe Talk, and iTalki.

Most marketplaces don’t offer their own curricula to teachers, but don’t let that deter you. As long as you have licensing privileges from the company, you can use online ESL curricula that you have purchased or subscribed to.

If you are looking for options, we have a page dedicated to curriculum. It’s as easy as choosing one and getting to work!

#1 ALLSCHOOL

Hot and hiring, Allschool is a new marketplace originating in Singapore in 2021. Their online teaching job opportunities are only somewhat different than Outschool.

Originally Allschool offered two programs: User Generated Content (the curriculum teachers bring in to teach) or Professionally Generated Content (Allschool’s curriculum) as the curricula options. Unfortunately, in March of 2022, Allschool sent this email to their teachers:

We are aware that you have been anxiously awaiting the launch of the PGC courses (Professionally Generated Courses) for quite some time now. This is why it brings us no joy whatsoever to have to say to you now, that due to insurmountable legal hurdles related to course review, the launching of PGC courses has been postponed indefinitely. Over the past 6 months we have worked tirelessly and assiduously to get the necessary permissions to launch these courses ethically and within legal guidelines. We came so close to getting it down, but there were some surprising legal bottlenecks towards the end. To say that all we here are Allschool are bitterly disappointed would be an understatement. We absolutely take full responsibility for your disappointment, and the inconvenience this may have caused you. We are sincerely sorry we couldn’t make it happen.

Despite the loss of a curriculum, remember that you can use those curricula that have given you license to use on for-profit sites. If you are interested in this option, please look at our curated online ESL curricula options.

ESL is only one of a variety of subjects that you can teach on this platform. Allschool also looks for online teachers who offer math, science, etc. They do expect that you to be a native English speaker, regardless of which program you teach.

But let’s back up to the basic question: do you need a degree to work online for Allschool? No, you do not.

Their application process is straight forward, but you will need to have a completed lesson plan available before applying. For each lesson you want to teach, you must submit the entire lesson for approval. If it isn’t approved, you must either resubmit with improvements or you won’t be able to teach it.

Their online handbook is very helpful to step you through the details of this platform. Along with information about the curriculum, it explains how their courses work. Those include one-time courses, multi-day courses, and ongoing courses. Parents may pay a one-off payment or for subscription classes.

Allschool has two teaching platform options: Zoom and Classpod.

As of March 28, 2022, Allschool has informed their teachers that the marketplace fees (which had been at the promotional rate of 15% until the end of June) has been extended. According to the company, if you use Zoom, the 15% promotional fee will not expire until December 31, 2022. If you use the Allschool platform, Classpod, that fee is even less at 10%! This rate runs from April 1st through June 30th, 2022. This commission is the lowest I found while researching. Some marketplaces’ commissions went much higher, including Outschool, which takes a 30% commission. #2 HALLO

Next up is Hallo, an ESL company that teaches online adult students worldwide.

As an online instructor for Hallo, you can set your own schedule and your own prices with a minimum of $10 per student. The average you might earn would be between $7 — $18 per hour. Hallo takes a commission of 40%.

When applying, you will need to submit a demo video. Aside from that, Hallo does have stricter rules for those who would like to be hired:

To get hired, online teachers must be native English speakers with an ESL certificate and a year of teaching ESL. Also required: teachers must legally be able to work from the US, Canada, UK, New Zealand, or South Africa and have access to a US bank or PayPal.

Hallo uses their own platform called hallo.tv. This is an app that a user can take anywhere. You can teach or learn the language from any place in the world using the app, whether it’s on your phone or on your iPad. Lessons are live English classes for adults and online instructors use various topics to teach English.

Students enroll in four-week subscription classes with their favorite teachers on this online platform. The subscription includes two one-hour classes a week for a total of eight lessons.

Each class has a maximum of 35 students, which means that you could have one student, or you could have 35. If you do have a large class, remember that you are being paid per student!

There wasn’t much available on Glassdoor. Reviewers noted that they enjoyed teaching for Hallo, but also that they didn’t make a lot of money.

#3 CAFETALK

CafeTalk is a language company located in Japan. 60% of the population that you will teach are Japanese, but you’ll also teach Asians, Europeans, and Americans that are using CafeTalk.

When you work for CafeTalk as an online instructor, your classes mainly serve adults in their thirties and forties, but their site notes that they have a growing number of children and seniors that are also using this particular platform.

CafeTalk requires a bachelor’s degree, and they do prefer a ESL certification, but it is not required.

Applying to be an online teacher for CafeTalk is very easy. You simply need to apply for an account, which is free. Next, fill out a profile highlighting your online teaching skills for students to see. You’ll have a short and simple interview with the company, and then you can start your online teaching career!

One thing you need to do in advance of the application is obtain a Skype account. Your interview will be conducted via Skype; when you teach online classes, you can use either Skype or Zoom.

The commission for this company varies. Basically, the more that you make, the smaller the percentage they take. Their commission can range from 15% to 40% (you can see their fee structure here). You can set your own prices, between $8 and $45 an hour. CafeTalk pays you via PayPal or Payoneer.

Class sizes are 1 to 1, and the classes are live. Although we are focusing on teaching English as a second language, multiple languages are taught on CafeTalk. If you are somebody who speaks other languages, you can also apply to teach those, too!

There is no curriculum available on this platform, so you will be responsible for whatever classes you choose to teach.

They do have approximately 3,000 online teachers and tutors registered on this particular platform.

On Glassdoor they were given about 3.2 stars. Reviewers like it for its flexibility as a side gig, but the cons are typical: it’s difficult to really gain your footing to create a strong online clientele base.

#4 iTALKi

Based out of Hong Kong is another very popular platform for language learners called iTalki. It’s also well known among the ESL online teaching community,

iTalki takes a 15% commission, which you may have noticed is quite low compared to other online teaching marketplaces. Although pay can run from $8 to $80 per hour, the average for teaching English via this online platform, according to their website, is about $10 to $16 per hour. PayPal and Payoneer are the options for payment. You can also offer package plans to your students to help increase the number of classes and income.

Does iTalki require a degree or an ESL certificate? Yes. And no. If you apply to be a “Professional Teacher,” you will need a degree. Or you can apply to be a “Community Tutor,” which does not require a degree.

There are approximately 5,000 registered English teachers on this platform. Classes are all one-to-one, live classes. You can teach online English as a second language, or again, any other language that you know.

iTalki has an interactive scheduling calendar as part of the platform so teachers can open available slots, and students can easily sign up for classes. With this tool, it’s easy to set and maintain your schedule.

Also available are a wide variety of options for platforms to use while teaching: Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, FaceTime, WeChat, or QQ. Although iTalki does not have a pre-made curriculum available, they do have a resources page that you can use as you are planning lessons.

Another helpful item on their website is the new online teacher 2022 handbook. From explaining how to set up your profile to suggesting how to market yourself, the handbook contains a wealth of helpful information. Below are two examples from the handbook:

On Glassdoor, iTalki has a 4.3 star rating. Among the pros that reviewers mentioned was the platform itself. The platform has many students, an easy application, and there is no demo or interview needed. Although if you are a Professional Teacher, you will need a video introduction.

Reviewers noted cons: bookings can be irregular, iTalki has a fairly restrictive cancellation policy and a slow payment system, and, as we’ve seen in many platforms, the ratio of students to teachers can be low.
